Your Guide To Denim By Chris Rovny (final)

not so hot

Now what should you avoid? Avoid any jeans that feature too much of anything. Your best bet is to keep the details to a minimum. For example, steer clear of jeans with very pronounced mustaches under the front pockets -- they're tacky at best. As well, any big bleached patches are not a good idea. And leave the lace, fringes and jewels for Christina, Britney and the Material Girl. Finally, remember that most jeans shrink when put in the dryer for the first time, so watch out because knee-length pants are only a good idea during summer.

3- If you really want to be ahead of the fashion curve, then get yourself a pair of baggy skateboard-style jeans. The skater look should make a strong comeback over the next few months.

2- Carpenter/worker-style denim is another look that has emerged in the spotlight. But beware; not all carpenter jeans are created equal. Try to find a pair that features a funky twist, like diagonally-angled flap button pockets at thigh level, a tighter flare cut, or patchwork with pronounced stitching.

the 3 biggest styles

There are mainly three styles of jeans that are all the rage this year.

1- You might consider the first style "the punk look;" the fit is slightly tighter around the thigh region and the legs flare out slightly at the bottom. They're usually torn in strategic places and feature some patchwork detailing. Punk-style jeans offer a rugged look -- take your pick among black, charcoal, and very light blue shades.

The style you choose really depends on your personal taste, style and body type. Flared, boot-cut, baggy, and carpenter/worker each make great trendy styles when it comes to the jeans your purchase. I could go into depth about each style, but it would be useless because trends vary so frequently. Instead, I'll tell you what to look for and what to avoid this season when buying trendy jeans, or what I like to call "jeans du jour."

Don't get me wrong; just because your jeans feature a stonewash finish or subtle lines on the front pockets, doesn't mean you can't wear them every day. I actually recommend that you purchase everyday jeans with some sort of trendy detail, whether it's in the cut, styling or finish. But as a rule of thumb, your classic jeans should be simple, so try to avoid unnecessary bells and whistles.

So what exactly can be considered everyday jeans? I'd say they consist of any straight, relaxed (looser) or boot-cut pair that features four traditional pockets, a zipper or button-fly and standard loopholes, and is available in traditional colors (various shades of black, gray and blue). Everyday jeans should also feature minimal detailing. For example, you should avoid flashy stitching, excessive sandblast or dye treatments, pronounced front mustaches (bleached lines that contribute to a washed-out look), patchwork, and rips or frays.

Plus, let's face it -- some days we don't necessarily feel like sporting up-to-the-minute jeans. We just want to slip into our good ol' favorite pair of blue jeans and chill. You know that pair I'm talking about, right? The one that offers a no-headache solution day in and day out, and that you just can't get rid of because they're so comfortable and always seem to be in style. Another reason why you should stock up on classic blue jeans is that it's usually harder to tell one pair apart from another, so you can wear them two or three days in a row without people noticing...a perfect reason to delay laundry day.

Everyone should own a pair or two of classic blue jeans. Why? Well for starters, most of us can't afford to drop over $100 a pop to be clad in the latest designer denim every day. Especially when you consider the shrinking expiry dates on those puppies -- it seems like fashion designers and retailers come out with a new denim flavor every month.

In order to simplify the task, I grouped denim into two broad categories: "everyday jeans," which consist of more traditional jeans in classic cuts and colors, and what I like to call "jeans du jour," which includes the latest styles in denim wear available on the market.

Look around you, they're everywhere: in stores, schools, restaurants, and even some corporate settings. Nowadays, everyone wears jeans -- and with reason. The popularity of jeans never really fades and, depending on the pair and brand, they're relatively cheap, durable and easy to maintain. Most pairs also blend well with just about anything you have in your wardrobe. Furthermore, they exude a hell of a lot of style and appeal when worn properly. Jeans are a staple in any man's wardrobe -- old or young, single or married, student or professional.
