Monitaly

Model: Triple Needle Chambray Shirt
$185

Nevermind that Monitaly is from Hermosa Beach, California, and manufactures some pretty un-beachy winter gear. This chambray shirt comes in the ideal blue -- not too light, not too dark. And, coincidentally, it’s the ideal pairing for the dark denim we just plugged.

Acne

Model: Max Raw
$269

Acne offers another option in the way of Swedish streetwear. The raw, over-dyed denim is second to none, and construction with three-needle stitching is top-notch. As for cut, it’s slim to say the least. If
straight-cut jeans are for you, then you’d be hard-pressed to find a better fit anywhere else.

Levi’s

Model: Skinny 511 Jeans (Rigid Dragon)
$44

How could we ever forgot about the first name in denim? Fortunately, Levi's's skinny silhouette isn’t so skinny -- it’s just right. And, as always, the dark wash makes them look far richer than the ridiculously cheap price it would have you believe.

All Saints Spitalfields

Model: Duane Jacket
$140

Spitalfields, Jack The Ripper’s infamous stomping ground, is apt for a British brand that offers slashed-up style reminiscent of the Industrial Revolution. The color is a bluish-green indigo, the collar is corduroy, and the shanks are rusted. If that all translates into fit and quality this good (and it does), sign us up for the next chimney sweep.

Nudie Jeans

Model: Terry Dry Indigo Jacket
$215

We’re not obsessed with the Nudie name, but it’s Swedish and certainly a step up from Ikea’s unhealthy appetite for umlauts. This jean jacket comes with the crisp, clean lines that have come to define Scandinavian style -- perfect for a denim look that’s a little more dressed up.

5- Remember that three’s a crowd

Denim on denim is dandy; but denim on denim on denim may very well be too much of a good thing. From jackets to jeans to shirts and ties, pick two and call it a day.

4- Think less ranch, more rugged

Completing this jeans on jeans look with real-life, authentic cowboy boots? Maybe for Halloween. Beat-up brogues would be the better bet. They follow in the rustic sensibility of the Marlboro man without actually becoming him.

3- Roll it up

Denim is the basis for casual dressing, so keeping everything tucked and buttoned seems downright sacrilegious. There should always be a certain sense of ease with jeans. Roll up your sleeves, undo a couple of buttons (insert crisp white undershirt or ringer tee here) and relax.

2- Complement in weight and wash

Wearing some flimsy chambray shirt with heavy jeans doesn’t count as double denim. It’s cheating. And the result isn’t nearly as impactful as the runway-worthy, ‘70s-inspired original. With any luck, you already know that a wussy pair of thin, elastane-infused jeans should be burned stat. That leaves one option: sturdy denim all around. Washes should likewise come from the same family. Vintage with vintage, clean with clean -- you get the idea.

1- Mix lights and darks

It’s the cardinal rule from which all others follow. And if you can’t get this one down, there’s no hope for you successfully completing your journey into denim squared. The good news: Blending blues isn’t rocket science. Pick a lighter colored jean jacket or shirt on top and a darker-washed denim for the bottom. The reverse has a way of transforming you into a top-heavy ice-cream cone. And matching exactly, well, that would be the Canadian tuxedo in its purest form.

Jeans On Jeans by Adam Fox

We used to think that doubling down on denim was criminal. Maybe it’s because images of an off-the-job Jay Leno simultaneously make us scared of chambray shirts, stonewashed jeans and Doritos. Or, perhaps it was that one time we stumbled upon a website dedicated to jeans on jean jackets and various frayed, Molson-soaked incarnations thereof. Turns out this combo has a name: the Canadian tuxedo. And that seems totally appropriate, since we never like to miss a chance to jab our maple-leaf loving, moose-hunting neighbors to the north. But all of our fears were silenced earlier this year when New York, London, Paris, and Milan told us that the Canucks were actually on to something. There is, however, a catch here -- five to be exact -- that will help you avoid looking like a Carhartt-crazed cowboy.
