How To Buy Jeans Online (5) By: Michael A. Lubarsky

Go too long
When you buy jeans online (or anywhere for that matter), you have two measurements to consider -- and only one can be manipulated in the name of style. The first measurement, and the one you should always obey, is your waist. Find your natural waist by leaning to one side as you stand. Locate the crease between your hip and torso and run the tape around your body at this point. Keep a finger between yourself and the tape to allow for a comfortable fit and those extra calories during the holidays.

The second measurement, and the one you have a little room to play with, is the inseam. Hold the tape along the inside of one leg just below your crotch and measure to one inch below your ankle. This will give you a traditional inseam measurement. From here, you should add a little length; go longer rather than shorter. You can have the jeans taken in if you think they are too long, but at least you have something to work with.
